Wire nails, three inches long, sold by the kilogram. Buying by weight is how nails are actually bought on a working site: a carpenter framing a roof, a gang striking and re-setting formwork, or a fencing crew needs them by the kilo and has no use for a small pack. Three inches is the structural length - framing and stud work, joists, noggins, rafters and purlins, heavy formwork and shuttering, fencing posts and rails, and pallets and crating. It reaches far enough into the second piece to carry load rather than just holding two faces together. Drive them at a slight angle in opposing pairs where a joint will be pulled, and blunt the tip when nailing near an end to stop the timber splitting.
