Steel nails, two inches long. This is the length that does most of the nailing on a building site: fixing battens and noggins, putting formwork and shuttering together, boxing in, fixing timber cladding and fascia, roofing battens, crates and pallets, temporary bracing and fencing. Two inches is long enough to hold two pieces of ordinary timber firmly and short enough not to burst through the far side of standard section. Nails remain quicker and far cheaper than screws where the joint does not need to come apart again, which is exactly what formwork and temporary work are. Blunt the point on a hammer face before driving near an end grain edge - a blunt nail crushes its way in instead of splitting the timber.
