Steel nails, an inch and a half long. They fill the gap between the one-inch nail, which is for thin trim and boarding, and the two-inch, which starts holding real timber together: an inch and a half suits fixing battens and grounds, ceiling brandering, thin cladding and boarding onto framing, crates and light boxing, and holding formwork panels where a longer nail would be hard to draw out afterwards. That last point matters on shuttering - nails that go in easily and come out again save far more time on a strip than they cost on the pour. Blunt the tip before nailing near an end grain edge; a blunt point crushes fibres through instead of wedging them apart and splitting the piece.
