Steel nails, one inch long - the short end of the range. An inch is what thin material needs: fixing beading and cover strips, nailing ceiling boards and soffit panels, tacking hardboard and thin ply, holding trim and mouldings, assembling light crates and boxes, and fixing battens to thin substrates. Using a longer nail on thin timber does not make the joint stronger; it simply comes through the far side or splits the piece. Nails are still faster and cheaper than screws wherever the joint is permanent. Blunt the tip against a hammer face before nailing close to an end or an edge - a blunt nail crushes its way through the fibres rather than wedging them apart and splitting the wood.
