A hammer with a short handle. Handle length decides how a hammer behaves far more than most people expect: a short shaft gives less swing and less force, but far more control and the ability to work where a full-length hammer simply cannot be swung - inside a carcass or cupboard, between studs, under a sink, in a duct or ceiling void, or close up to a wall. Used for tapping joints together, setting tacks and small nails, adjusting fittings, panel and trim work, and any job where a full swing would do damage rather than good. It is not the tool for framing or demolition, where the shorter handle just means more blows for the same work. Keep one alongside a full-size hammer rather than instead of one.
