Cavalry self-tapping screws in gauge 8, one inch long. Both numbers matter: the heavier gauge gives a thicker shank and a stronger thread than the gauge 6, and the extra length lets the screw pass through a bracket or spacer and still find enough metal behind to grip. It is the size reached for when a self-tapper is holding something that carries load rather than merely staying in place - fixing brackets and mounts to steel section, securing panels and covers on machinery, gutter and downpipe brackets, ducting hangers, and sheet-to-frame connections. Pilot it in thicker steel to avoid snapping the screw, drive at moderate speed, and stop as soon as it pulls up tight; over-torquing a self-tapper strips the thread it just cut.
