Cavalry self-tapping screws in gauge 8, half an inch long. The heavier gauge in the shortest length is a deliberate combination rather than a compromise: it gives a thick, strong shank for a fixing that has to hold, in a length short enough not to protrude behind thin material where a longer screw would foul a mechanism, a cable run or somebody's hand. That suits joining sheet to sheet in ducting and trunking, fixing brackets and cleats to thin steel section, appliance and cabinet panels, gutter and flashing work, and light steel framing where the sections overlap. It cuts its own thread as it drives. Pilot in harder steel, keep the speed moderate, and stop as soon as it pulls up tight - over-torquing strips the thread it has just cut.
