A scraper with a four-inch blade and a rubber handle. Blade width decides what the tool is good at: four inches is the wide one, for covering ground rather than working into detail. It fills and smooths large patches of plaster, filler and skim, strips old paint and wallpaper off flat walls, cleans excess adhesive off a floor before tiling, lifts and levels tile adhesive, and clears mortar and screed residue. The rubber handle matters more than it sounds on a tool that is pushed hard for hours - a bare handle raises blisters by mid-morning. Keep the blade clean and flat; a blade with a nick or dried filler on it drags a line through every stroke and undoes the work.
