A pipe wrench, eight inches long. It is not an ordinary spanner and does a job no spanner can: the hardened toothed jaws bite into a round surface, and the loose upper jaw tightens its grip the harder you pull, which is what lets it turn pipe, fittings and anything else with no flats to grab. Eight inches is the small size - right for the pipe sizes found in domestic plumbing, taps and valves, gas and water fittings, and working in the confined space under a sink or behind a cistern. Pipe wrenches mark whatever they grip, so keep them off chrome and finished surfaces. Two are often needed at once: one to hold the fitting and one to turn the pipe, or the whole run twists.
