Cavalry gypsum screws in gauge 6, an inch and a quarter long. It exists because the two lengths either side of it are sometimes both wrong: the one-inch does not reach far enough into a timber stud to hold properly, while the inch-and-a-half breaks through the back of a thinner board or stands proud inside a shallow metal void. An inch and a quarter threads that needle, and fitters who work with a particular board thickness day in and day out often settle on it as their standard rather than the more common 1.5. Same bugle head that sets flush and dimples the paper, same self-starting coarse thread. Used across ceilings, partitions, dry lining and boxing. If you are unsure, take a piece of your board to the counter and match the screw to the build-up.
