A 10-inch aldrop, model 8117. An aldrop is the sliding bolt fitted horizontally across a door, where a rod slides out of its barrel into a socket on the frame and holds the door shut. It is one of the most common pieces of door hardware in Kenya, fitted to main doors, back doors, store rooms, gates and rental units, either on its own or alongside a lock. Most patterns take a padlock through the hasp, which is why an aldrop is often used to secure a door properly without cutting a mortice into it. The 10-inch figure is the size of the bolt, and a longer bolt gives a deeper throw into the frame. Aldrops are fitted to single doors; a double door needs a tower bolt on the inactive leaf as well.
